Install Android 8.1.0 Oreo Factory Image for Google Nexus 5X


The new and official Android 8.1.0 Oreo Factory Image builds are live for Nexus and Pixel phones. Check the info below in order to learn how to flash the new factory image for the Nexus 5X.

This tutorial is destined to be used by advanced users, as you can flash the factory image and restore the phone to 100% stock Android Oreo firmware. The guide is great for those that have installed a custom ROM previously and now are looking to restore their devices to stock OS.

The Android 8.1.0 OS brings tons of extra features and tweaks over the previous Android 8.0 firmware. Here are some of the most interesting changes added in this new release: support for viewing battery levels of other devices you’re connected via Bluetooth, Safer Internet Browsing, apps are now restricted to only one notification chime per second, notifications mute support, wallpaper-based themes for both homescreen and lockscreen, redesigned emojis, and more.

Check the following guidelines before starting the installation:

  • use this tutorial only with the Google Nexus 5X.
    – do not attempt to use the tutorial for other different devices.
  • enable the USB Debugging option from the Developer Options under Settings.
    – if the Developer Options is not listed in Settings, then you will have to enable them first: go to Settings> About Phone> and tap seven times on the Firmware Build Number.
    – return to Settings, as Developer Options will now be listed there and you can open them and enable USB Debugging.
  • next, enable the OEM Unlock option too, from the same Developer Options menu.
  • by installing this new Android 8.1.0 Factory Image you will end up wiping the entire device of all the data.
    – make sure to create backups before the installation.
  • use the tutorial only if you are an advanced user, as we won’t be blamed in case you brick the device nor in case you lose any data files.
  • read all steps and don’t skip any steps listed below.
  • before starting the install you need to make sure that there is at least 50% charge left before the device powers off completely.

How to install Android 8.1.0 Factory Image for Google Nexus 5X:

The first thing you need to do before starting the Oreo 8.1 factory image is to setup the Platform-Tools ADB drivers. This will allow the computer to recognize the phone when connected via usb cable.

Here’s how to setup the the Platform-Tools ADB Fastboot Drivers:

  • download the Platform-Tools archive from the links below:
    – make sure to download the drivers specific to your computer’s OS.
    – for Windows click here.
    – for Mac OS click here.
    – for Linux click here.
  • extract the archived contents and save them to Platform-Tools folder.
  • install Google USB Drivers from here.

Flash Android 8.1.0 Factory Image for Nexus 5X:

  1. Download the Android 8.1 Developer Preview image file from here or here.
  2. Unzip all the contents and save them on your PC.
    – save all the obtained files to Platform-Tools folder.
  3. Power off your smartphone.
  4. Next, boot it in Fastboot / Bootloader Mode.
  5. Go to Platform-Tools folder.
    Launch a Command Prompt window/ Terminal screen with admin right in Platform-Tools folder.
  6. Connect your Nexus 5X to PC via usb cable.
    Make sure that the phone has been detected, and continue to the next step.
  7. You have to unlock the bootloader of your Nexus 5X first.
    Enter the following command line: fastboot flashing unlock
    Confirm process.
    – note that all the data will be wiped from your device.
  8. Go back to Platform-Tools folder and start the installation of Android 8.1.0 factory image.
  9. Double-click the Flash-all.bat installer script if you are using Windows PC.
    Launch Flash-all.sh if you are using a Linux or Mac OS computer.
  10. Confirm the installation process and wait for the update to be completed successfully.
  11. When the flashing process is done you can unplug the phone from PC and reboot the device in normal mode.

These were all the steps that you had to take in order to complete the update process.

NOTE: If you are running a 100% stock Android 8.0.0 firmware with the build number OPR3.170623.020 and date set for December 2017, then you can use the above instructions and flash the factory image without losing any data files. But, for that to work, you will need to open the flash-all.bat script in Wordpad/ Notepad and delete the “-w” text from the line of code.
