How to Root Motorola Moto X4

0 1

Gaining root on the new Motorola Moto X4 can be easily done especially if you are still running on Android Nougat – the method from below was firstly applied on the Nougat system but it should run on the Oreo software too. Anyhow, if you are ready to unlock your phone’s system, we are here to assist you. And, in that respect, during the following lines you will be able to find everything that’s required for the actual root process: the advantages and the risks implied, the essential pre-requisites and the detailed steps that must be followed.

Gaining root access is a custom operation that’s not supported by Motorola. However, is an operation that can help you smartly use your Android device because once it’s applied you will manage to gain full control over built-in apps, features, capabilities and functionality. That’s possible because the root process will unlock the stock Android software. So, in the end you will be able to access, modify, customize, optimize and personalize your Motorola Moto X4 without hassle.

And that’s a great thing. On a rooted system you can bump speeds, upgrade battery life, customize the Android UI and improve general performance. Shortly, you can unleash the true potential of your handset – since factory or default restrictions won’t be experienced anymore you will be able to tweak everything that’s left and here are a few examples of custom operations that can help you spice things up on your Motorola Moto X4: you can add root-only apps, you can install apps from other sources than Google Play, you can install features which cannot be found on the default Android system, you can remove bloatware and start-up programs, you can update with custom ROMs (such as Lineage OS, AOKP or Paranoid Android), you can overclock or undervolt CPU frequencies, you can flash custom MODs and kernels and so on.

Now, if you want the same things for your Moto X4, first complete the steps explained below. Just be careful while doing so as you are about to perform an unofficial process – you are going to flash a third party root exploit that cannot be associated with Google or with Motorola (the credits for this tutorial should go to those of xda-developers – the original source page can be accessed here). Thus, as a general conclusion, you will lose your phone’s warranty while gaining root access because removing default / factory restrictions isn’t an operation provided by Motorola. However, the warranty can be restored but only if you choose to reinstall the stock Android firmware on your device – if course, in that case you are going to revoke root access and restore your phone back to its initial state.

You should also backup your Moto X4 before starting the root operation. A backup can help you save your personal data, info and accounts – such files might get wiped out during the unlocking process. For example, you should choose to secure your contacts, call logs, texts, images, videos, audio files, market apps, internet settings, calendar info, saved passwords, IMEI / NVRAM data and similar other stuffs before doing anything else – by using the right backup and restore solutions you will be able to successfully restore all your files afterwards.

Along with your general files you should also save the current Android system – if something wrong happens you can then choose to go back to stock without having to follow a new update / downgrade operation. Therefore, consider in making a Nandroid backup on your Motorola Moto X4.

Now, for the root process you will first need to:

  • Unlock the bootloader of your Android based device – that’s the first tweak that must be applied in this case.
  • Install a custom recovery image on your phone – you will have to flash the root exploit through a custom recovery environment so learn how to flash TWRP recovery on your Moto X4.
  • A computer is required as the root exploit must be downloaded and saved there.
  • Note: temporarily deactivate the security protection that runs on your computer if the download process cannot be completed.
  • On your smartphone the Developer Options field must be enabled; if it isn’t, go to About Phone and tap on Built Number (repeatedly, for 7 or 10 times) until the ‘you are a developer’ message appears.
  • Next, go to Menu – > Settings and access Developer Options; from there you will have to check the USB Debugging field.
  • Check the battery status icon on your Moto X4. It will be important to charge your smartphone before starting the root operation if the power left is lower than 50%.
  • Be careful as if during the root operation your phone will get switched off, different soft related problems might cause severe malfunctions – so, don’t skip the charging process if that’s required.
  • Don’t forget that this tutorial is compatible only with the Motorola Moto X4 that runs on an unlocked bootloader and which is installed with TWRP recovery.
