How to Manually Update Sony Xperia XZs to Official Android 8.0 Oreo

The Android 8.0 Oreo firmware is officially available for the Sony Xperia XZs. Currently the OTA is being pushed out slowly depending on each market and on certain carriers. However, the full firmware package is also available only which means that you can choose to install the Oreo software manually. Well, this manual update operation will be explained and detailed during the following guidelines, everything being compatible with the Sony Xperia XZs.

Android 8.0 Oreo for Sony Xperia XZs comes with all the new Oreo features, apps and capabilities along with Sony’s own UI and built-in apps. Overall, the firmware is light so everything will be fast and smooth. Moreover, the system was optimized and customized so that more power can be provided during certain situations, without asking for too many resources. And, of course, some tweaks were applied and the battery life was therefore improved.

Now, by default the Android 8.0 Oreo OTA can embrace your smartphone only if the stock Android software is already running above all and only if tweaks weren’t already applied (for example, root access mustn’t be ensured). In any other situations the OTA won’t be received. In those situations you will have to use the steps from below for manually installing the new official update – and when doing so you will restore your Sony Xperia XZs back to its initial state meaning that you are going to lose root access, relock the bootloader, reinstall the stock recovery image and reapply bootloader and factory restrictions.

Flashing the official Android 8.0 Oreo software can help you smartphone manage other tricky situations. For example, you can successfully address different software related issues such as battery drain, heating problems, signal strength issues, total blackouts, lags, hangs, bugs, screen freeze and more.

You should backup your Sony Xperia XZs before installing the stock Android 8.0 Oreo ROM. Your data might get corrupted or even wiped out while the flashing operation is completed so if you have important files saved on your phone the best will be to secure everything. In a few words, here are the easiest ways in which a classic backup can be performed: you can use built-in cloud storage services added by Sony and by your carrier, you can go to Google Play and download dedicated backup and restore apps (make sure you choose already tested tools) or you can just sync your files with your own Google Account.

This is going to be an official update operation. You won’t risk in losing your phone’s warranty – that usually happens when you install custom ROMs such as Lineage OS, AOKP or Paranoid Android – and you won’t have to use any complex or risky programs for resuming the actual update operation. Bottom line, you have nothing to worry about.

But, since this is a manual operation, the steps from below can be completed only if a computer can be used. On that computer your Sony Xperia XZs drivers must be installed. Also, on your smartphone Developer Options must be enabled – if not, go to About Phone and tap repeatedly for 7 or 10 times on Built Number until you notice the ‘you are a developer’ message displayed. Finally, on your phone access Developer Options and from that place check the USB Debugging option.

The power left on your smartphone must be higher than 50%. Under this threshold your phone might remain without battery life right in the middle of the update process. If that happens different soft related problems might be caused within the Android core system so you can end up in bricking your device. That’s why it’s imperative to charge your handset before doing anything else.

The steps from below are compatible with the Sony Xperia XZs. Don’t use this step by step guide if you use any other Android based device. Note: for the Sony Xperia XZ using this tutorial instead.
